Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Social media has revolutionized communication, offering unprecedented opportunities for individuals and groups to connect, share ideas, and shape public opinion. While its benefits are numerous, the platform has also been exploited to perpetuate negative narratives, including ethnic stereotypes. In multi-ethnic societies like Nigeria, ethnic stereotypes—generalized and often harmful assumptions about specific ethnic groups—can exacerbate tensions and hinder social cohesion. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have been used to amplify these stereotypes, sometimes with profound social consequences (Ibrahim & Abubakar, 2023). In Bogoro Local Government Area, Bauchi State, where diverse ethnic communities coexist, social media plays a dual role: fostering dialogue and perpetuating divisive stereotypes. Recent research highlights that misinformation, bias in user-generated content, and the viral nature of social media significantly contribute to the persistence of ethnic stereotypes (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024). This study seeks to explore the impact of social media on the spread of ethnic stereotypes in Bogoro, examining how online narratives shape interethnic relations and identifying strategies to mitigate the negative effects.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Ethnic stereotypes remain a significant barrier to unity and progress in Bogoro Local Government Area. While social media has been praised for its potential to promote inclusivity and dialogue, it has also been weaponized to spread divisive narratives. The anonymity and speed of content dissemination on platforms like Twitter and WhatsApp exacerbate the problem, allowing harmful stereotypes to gain traction and influence public attitudes. Despite the widespread use of social media in Bogoro, little is known about its specific role in shaping ethnic perceptions or how these stereotypes impact social harmony. This research addresses these gaps by investigating the influence of social media on the spread of ethnic stereotypes in the region, with a view to proposing actionable solutions for fostering healthier online interactions.

  1. How prevalent are ethnic stereotypes on social media platforms in Bogoro?
  2. What impact do social media narratives have on interethnic relations in Bogoro?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to reduce the spread of ethnic stereotypes on social media in Bogoro?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media significantly contributes to the spread of ethnic stereotypes in Bogoro.
  2. Social media narratives negatively affect interethnic relations in Bogoro.
  3. Implementing targeted strategies can reduce the prevalence of ethnic stereotypes on social media in Bogoro.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is crucial for understanding the dynamics of social media and its role in shaping ethnic perceptions in Bogoro Local Government Area. Its findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, media practitioners, and community leaders seeking to address the harmful effects of ethnic stereotyping. By identifying the drivers of stereotypes on social media and proposing practical mitigation strategies, the research contributes to fostering social harmony and inclusivity. Additionally, the study enriches academic discourse on social media's influence in multicultural societies, offering a framework for analyzing similar issues in other contexts.
